NYC Skyline BW

Welcome to Rosh hahokara , a city where you feel safe, where we use wasted materials and turn garbage into art.  my city is a  tribute to the people of Kiryat Bialik. My statementis that the reality of the corona made us understand things differently to get proportions and use raw materials at no cost.

about me

shoval arviv

My name is Shoval Arviv, I am 25 years old, today I finished my third year in the textile design track at Shenkar College.

Most of my inspiration comes from garages, mechanics, roads, walls, different types of materials that are called dirty, even corrosion, and turn them into a unique design that connects pleasantly and right to the eye.

The ambition is to engage at the end of textiles with fashion, to connect unrelated materials, to create sharing and brotherhood between completely different images but ultimately connect so right on a level that they will say: Who the fuck thought about it?

CITY LIFE

the process

First step was finding a location.

Finding the right characters was the second step. I was looking for characters that have a strong connection to the location and wanted to articulate them in a visual way.

Afterwards came the invention of the designer – a deep character with many layers and characteristics and attaching her to the chosen location.

I examined myself my boundaries, and my power since my goal was to rise above my own image so I could pitch my art to some kind of people?.

I have approach potential clients from the selected location: The Industrial area Bialik as I was aiming to go out to "the real market".

I created three different images and offered the council of Kiryat Bialik my idea – create new statues out of different materials that are being thrown away on a daily basis in that industrial area.  To start with trash and turn it into art, so the statues could diverse that are to some departments to help the people find what they are looking for, like in a grocery store.

I met with the council representative, but unfortunately they canceled the statues subject since the area is not divided by categories, but they were interested with my ideas and asked me to think about a different project. This is how I got to the final project – out of the new reality we all give in to – Corona virus.

It's a waste to waste it – was the first name to this project.

I started collecting materials that were thrown to trash, photographed them and brought them to class.

The new reality that Covid-19 brought us and the daily use in masks, and people’s need to feel safe, made me create helmets. Old motorcycle’s helmets that have no use, and to turn them into textile helmets. The helmets will go to the are  to the different council workers, who work everyday for the people, as an act of respect.

The next step was looking and collecting a variety of old helmets all over the country.

Milestone- the project come out of the mask into the helmet, and how I see it as a textile designer.

I started with sketches on a4 papers and moved to 3d objects so to learn objects with volume. Then I chose the characters the helmets are made for: the mayor of Kiryat Bialik, the manager of transportation and healthcare, and manager of the education department.

  And placing at the location I chose.

I emphasised the position of each character.

Explanation of the idea of the cooperation between the people of the city to Kiryat Bialik it self, full explanation of the Idea.

The final product - Textile Helmet

I decided to build the mayor's helmet according to his greatness and the advantage he made for Kiryat Bialik. Mr. Eli Dokorsky has made Kiryat Bialik the greenest and most environmentally friendly city for about 6 consecutive years. So I used shades of green and yellow leaves to emphasize the environmental benefit of the mayor.

I put a text into the helmet, which is actually the Kiryat Bialik anthem, and in addition I left a mark as the name of the Bialik municipality with the help of a drawing of the municipality's emblem.

Materials:
* Defective helmet
* Gravel from the street
* Yellow pages from previous years
* Plastic wood
* Silk Flowers
* Poska acrylic

This helmet is focused on the director of transportation and assistants in the PA. Mrs. Etty Stengel's job is to manage the entire subject of vehicles and travel of the special education and of the education department. Mrs. Etty Stengel continued to work around the clock so that there would be an orderly framework for children with special needs who are all residents of the Kiryat Bialik Municipality.
So in this helmet I put emphasis on roads, road signs, arrows, wheels and the whole issue of travel as much as possible.

Materials:
* Posca acrylic
* Rivets left over from Purim
* Foil engraving in a shape cut in silver mirror appearance

This helmet is known to the director of the education department, Mr. Ami Reuven.
Mr. Ami Reuven has achieved many achievements over the years such as: integrating communicative children in regular classes, finding students' strengths.
Mr. Ami Reuven brought to Kiryat Bialik to get a great workman and he: Kiryat Bialik is in the first place in the country among the municipalities in investing in every student in education.
That's why I put this helmet on writing leaves, on drawing small people, a ruler, an interesting text that was also made by writing tools, casting colored pencils and pasting pencil sharpeners in different colors. Just like the refinement of Mr. Ami Reuven that deserves gratitude.

Materials:
* Rubber bands collected from a printing room
* Pushpins collected from a printing room
* Poska acrylic
